So as it's Christmas, you should definitely head up to Killington for some high quality skiing. But while you're there, check into the mountain biking programs (and trails that are open) during the summer because:
1. You need to stay in shape
First, disclosure. I am a member of the Snow Sports School at Killington. I have taught and skied many places. Killington is unique. The combination of varied, challenging terrain coupled with the famous Killington access road nightlife is nearly impossible to duplicate. Great restaurants, incredible local musicians, and snow making that is second to none.
LEARN TO SKI HERE! Both my wife and I took the 3 day learn to ski program in JAN 2017 and it was fantastic! The instructors are the best and the group lessons are small. On 2 of the days we were the only people in our lesson. It also gives you the learning pass which gives you 50% of the rest of the current season and next season for tickets, rentals, and lessons!
Full disclosure - I LOVE Killington! have skied there since I was a kid (I'm no longer a kid - actually a early stage baby boomer). Some day I hope to work there, but for now, I'll just tell you about it.
Skied here for 3 days in a row (Dec. 18-21) First day was absolutely terrible because it was raining! Obviously, I am not holding the resort against the weather though! The slopes are nice and the terrain parks are great if you want to improve your riding. If you are looking for powder, this is not the place to go. It is al groomed and only 1-2 places in the trees. I had a good time other wise and made some immense progress between the timberline and easy street parks. Also, if you are renting and feel you are advanced, do the potter brothers demo rentals! They are amazing and allow you to try out brand new boards... much better than the regular rentals from the resort place. All-in-all, there are a ton a slopes and a lot to see, plus it is definitely one of the best place the east coast has to offer
This year, I arrived home to New England early and drove to Killington to catch some fall foliage. Being a little out of touch (and living too far south), I had no idea that they have the extensive mountain biking program that they do during the summer and fall seasons. It was completely weird and out of sorts to hike around the trails and see mountain bikers everywhere. And nice to see that the chairlift guys remained very helpful and friendly.
Great snow! No lift lines to speak up during the week and even on weekends their uphill capacity keeps you skiing! Unmatched terrain here on the East Coast. A lot of variety and great tree skiing!
The skiing is, and has always been phenomenal. I love Bear Mtn. but my favorite trail of all time is Cascade. I love it because of it's steepness and long pitch. As I used to ski on Atomic 195's, I fell a lot because the moguls were cut by shorter skis. But on a beautiful sunny afternoon with fresh packed powder, there's nothing better.
2. The mountains are as beautiful in the summer as they are now!
